So what are they?

QR stands for Quick Response code and is a type of barcode. Whilst they are black and white like traditional barcodes, QR codes consist of a square made up of black and white modules. These modules are arranged uniquely and hold a key to digital information. They have become increasingly popular as they can be read instantly by numerous devices and can store vast amounts of data in comparison to a normal barcode.

How does it work?

When a customer scans a QR code with a mobile phone (iPhone, smartphone and other devices with a camera) it will link to digital content on the internet which can also activate a number of other phone functions such as email, instant messenger and text message. All of these functions are set in place by creating your own company QR codes – you can even create one for each product. All you need is a QR code generator and it takes a few minutes to set up. Scan this QR code with your smartphone to see how it works!

What you can do

QR codes are a great way to engage your customers through a direct call to action. There is no limit to how much information you can upload onto a code – so you could just link to your website, social media pages (you can even link to a facebook ‘like’ button)  or an ebook or book chapter. For specific campaigns such as special offers, you can send customers to a specially designed landing page.

What they can do for you?

QR codes are another easy way to enhance both your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and your SMO (Social Media Optimization) by linking to videos, images, posts, blogs from your sites. QR codes like most digital marketing can be scrutinised for ROI by using various sites that provide analytics and by using link shortening services like bit.ly which can now automatically generate a QR code for sharing your shortened links.
